Lately I have neglected my Bible journaling—not my Bible, just the art part. We are currently in the middle of the Southside Bible Challenge on Wednesdays at our church. This is an event we do annually in January. It is a competition and focuses on a different book of the Bible each year. If you know me, then you know I am extremely competitive. And you may or may not know that I LOVE to memorize Scripture. This event is a perfect combination of these things and I find it fun and challenging each year.
This year we are in the book of 2 Corinthians, and this particular week we are working on chapter 3. I woke up on Tuesday morning with only about half of the chapter memorized, so at 7 a.m. I was hard at work trying to get those other verses in my head. And then it happened… I came upon verse 17. This verse was like a breath of fresh air to me, and not just because of what it says. The real beauty of this verse was that I already knew it! It was a freebie. 🙂 When you are trying to memorize half the chapter in one morning, you really need at least one freebie.
This verse delighted me so much, that I decided to illustrate it. I hadn’t done anything new in my journal Bible since last month, and it felt good to get back into it. Here’s how my page turned out…
Bible Journaling
What a beautiful promise this verse contains for us. As Christians we are promised the Holy Spirit living inside us permanently. He doesn’t come and go or just come half way. He is completely with us every moment of every day. And, according to 2 Corinthians 3:17, this means we have freedom every moment of every day. It isn’t temporary freedom or partial freedom. It is complete freedom and it is found only in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Wow!
Illustrating my faith is such an enjoyable experience for me. It allows me to combine my love of art with my love of Scripture. Unlike the other art that I create, Bible Journaling is just for me.

Hi Kim! I am working on getting some people together to share ideas and information. I know a few others in this area who have started Bible journaling. In the meantime, I would start with a blank art journal and just “play” with some scripture art in there. Supplies can be tricky in a Bible because of the thin pages, but you don’t have to worry with that in an art journal so just use the markers, stamps, paint, etc that you already have. I would love to get together and talk about different journaling Bibles and supplies that work in them! Let me know if you’re interested. 🙂
Hello JoAnn, I have been able to come to a few of your classes and always have a great time. I am interested in bible journaling, but dont know where to start, any tips and hints would be greatly appreciated. Ive see all the stuff online about this but I dont know anyone personally that does this.
